As long as they keep crazy stuff like that efuse chip off HTC devices I think we'll be ok. Freeing the Thunderbolt took no time at all, whereas the X seems to be locked down for the foreseeable future

I've started to not really care about this whole bootloader stuff. Not even running a ROM anymore, just rooted and OC'd. Will do the same on my next phone. Most people root and don't even know why or what to do, so in the end its a moot point.

I hear what you saying and I would agree with you IF we knew that manufacturers would continue to support the devices. If manufacturers continued to support the devices I would not mind it being locked so much. But my nook is running gingerbread while I am still hoping that motorola will update the droid 2 to gingerbread. The fruit is locked down as well but you know that your device will continue to be supported until you decide you dont want it anymore.

I've been saying the same thing about an iphone too. With an iphone you can jailbreak it so easy and then it is open. It just sucks because I love Android but without it being completely open it really takes away alot. Way to go Motorola

There are about to be some very fundamental mistakes made by Android and the manufacturers. They had the leg up up with open source. People were willing to look past the lack of updates if they could doit on their own. Take that away leaving us with being dependent on Verizon and the manufacturers for updates and I am not so sure about the future.

This is more the manufacturers and carriers destroying what Android was all about.

What is all this doom & gloom? If it's not encrypted I still don't get it. Even the Nexus S has a locked.
