Ok, I went to their site and I can't tell whether it's free or not. So, I guess I'll give it a try. My Toshiba is a couple of years old and probably qualifies as sucky on speed. I think you said to use the h264 setting, is this right?

At the top of the page, it says Handbrake is GPL Licensed. GPL stands for General Public License, which means the software is freely available for distribution and modification, as long as the source code is also freely available for distribution.

Pretty much anytime you see GPL or "open source", that's tantamount to FREE.

Sorry, I did not know that.

No worries, not everyone is an open source nerd.

Some of us definitely are.

If you are looking for an open source alternative then when you search the internet for how to convert a movie or an exercise program or a web portal then include the words Open Source in your search. As in "open source web portal" or "open source graphic program" or "open source convert wav to mp3"

And then, you too can be an open source nerd and impress your friends:)
