How to silence notifications but still hear text messages?

I keep my phone next to my bed so I can get calls and texts at night for work or family emergencies. However, I don't want to wake up like I did 3 times last night just because an application updated or some such nonsense. Is there a way or an app that will let me hear text messages but silence the other notifications?
