How to put Gingerbread OS on my Pro?

I keep hearing about this wonderful GB OS and my husband loves it on his X, but I'm not sure how to put it on my Pro? Does it require rooting or hacking? This might sound silly, but I don't want to lose all my apps and contacts and photos, etc.

Thanks for any help & guidance.

Unfortunately Gingerbread is not available in any form for the Motorola Droid Pro. There are rumors that it is scheduled for an update but it seems to be last in line after the Droid X, Droid 2 Global, Droid 2, and Droid X2.

That is not the case. You can install the rooted 2-part gingerbread installation, the non rooted update.zip format (flashable in stock recovery), or flash CyanogenMod 7. So there are essentially three "forms" of gingerbread available for you to try. Give me a couple minutes and I'll track down the links for you.

Here is the link for the non-rooted OTA update that rolled out to a few people (myself included) a couple months back:

Here is the link for the thread regarding the two-part rooted install of gingerbread. The files are available through the Team Black Hat application.

See the Droid Pro CyanogenMod 7 link in my signature for the thread pertaining to CM7. However, there are a few features, camera included, that are not working quite yet. The developing team working on CM7 for the Pro is working hard to find fixes for the current bugs.

Edit: Here is the link to the Team Black Hat application if you are planning to install the rooted two-part gingerbread install.

After reading your OP again, I just noticed that you said you didn't want to lose any of your apps and what not. If this is the case, I would go with the first option listed, which is for the OTA update.zip file.
