Do you guys mean compiling from source, or using a base rom?

There was a good guide at Alldroid for compiling from source, but it's gone for now.

As for using a base ROM, you really just need some experience with adb, and you should be able to make the changes you want to the ROM. Then, you can take the original update.zip file, and "stuff" it with your changes.

That's kind of a really watered down explanation, sorry :(

xda is your best source. But it's not a simple process. It does require programming skills and an understanding of how the Android OS works. I'd love to learn but don't have the time to get the prerequisites nailed down first.

    Anyway, here's a link to a sticky at XDA-Developers:

    Some Advice....

Ill post them up either tomorrow or first of the week, sorry for the delay but I work weekends.

Ill also post up the other things that I have been working on that are meant to be community projects, breaking down the build process into a flowchart so it is more easily modified etc.

That would be fantastic! I just got the source code from GIT and was able to run make successfully, but I have no clue where to go from here to package it up and try it out on my Motorola droid (I'm sure there is plenty left to do prior to that point).

Not as much as you might think, to just make the rom into a package just "make otapackage" to make it phone specific take a little bit more work though. If I get a chance today I will be posting my guide. I have to work on it some to make funtional again, with the release of 10.04 and the upcoming release of froyo some things have broke.

I haven't made the switch to 10.04 yet (still on 9.10 x64). Perhaps this will be excuse enough to make the switch. Thanks for taking the time to support us n00bs!

I'm more of a noob than some want to believe... its a mindset, a different way of looking at things, the understanding that anything is possible on a computer its just a matter of searching and finding the answer.

Yup, I write software for a living (I even have a few android apps out on the market). I'm just a bit too lazy to dig through everything if I know that someone else has already compiled a nice howto for me to read, study and learn.
