I have ran z4root twice and both times it claimed that it was successful. Then I would try to run a root app and could not grant superuser permissions.
I have even tried the "doroot.bat" method and it did not work.
Also have tried to unroot and root again. No luck.
Has anyone else had any success in getting root back?

Something is wrong with the superuser apk i think.
In terminal emulator I have a $ and when i type "su" it says permission denied.

I give up... I've tried adb, one click root and unroot, and z4root several times. Don't know what is going on.

Still no root. Have ran Z4root what seems like a thousand times, and tried the doroot.bat way also. Grrr.

You could try the scorched earth method of performing a factory reset of your data then flash with the 2.3.340 System-only SBF. This should get your phone back up to nearly stock conditions, then run z4root.

Unfortunately, its what I had to do when I first attempted to root coming from from 2.3.15. Fortunately I don't have a lot of apps or settings to fiddle with, but I know its not that easy for some.

Save that for a last resort.

I had trouble rooting the phone as well....z4root worked for me but my usual method of rageinthecage did not. I'd say try it manually with adb tools...might work for you

It sounds like people are having luck with the scorched earth method... I'm going to hold out hope that another fix comes around though.

FYI, after trying numerous methods, I finally found one that worked: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-2-hacks/80080-much-simpler-guide-rooting-no-pc-required.html

I used this package from droidlife, which contains all the necessary files: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
(I replaced Superuser.apk with the latest version though)

I renamed bloatware, successfully ran update, and then tried z4root. The first time it appeared to lock up so I restarted the Droid X and ran it again. The second time it said it successfully rooted the phone but it wasn't. Then I did the bunch of steps of extracting rage and copy the files to system and changing permissions mounting etc using Android Terminal. It was great to go through those steps because I've been meaning to learn how to do command line stuff on the phone. I then ran z4root again and it again appeared to lock up. This time I walked away from the phone and came back 20 minutes later. The phone was frozen so I pulled the battery and when it restarted it was rooted. I wonder if I had just done that the first time if it would have worked without all the other steps.
