I've noticed a few people ask how to disable 3G and just use 1x for data, and since it's not in the mobile network settings menu people started to assume it wasn't there.

If you open the Phone app and dial
    *#*#INFO#*#*
it will automatically bring you to a menu, click on Phone Information, scroll down to where you see "CDMA auto (PRL)" change this to "CDMA only", and your phone will stop using 3G and the status bar will confirm this.

This will decrease your network speed, but apparently increase battery life. Also it will prevent roaming charges if you don't have a national plan (from what i hear?)

    Why use 1X? I don't get it?

But can you still use it in roaming areas?

    Or internationally?

I am unsure, although when you're not in an area with 3G you will use 1x, so yes I would assume it will work everywhere there is 3G, as well as places without.

But I literally haven't moved since I changed it, can't be 100% sure, although I am 99% sure.

Is there a way to disable voice reception but keep 3G?

I'd love to be able to stream Pandora or Grooveshark without worrying about phonecall/text interruptions.

I dont think theres any reason you would ever want to disable 3g. Im sure the battery life thats saved is very miniscule, especially when us droid users are always doing something nuts on our phones anyway.

The fact the Droid has a phone function is a negative for me. I hate phones and have broken more than 2 dozen (by throwing them) over the last 10 years.

There's a widget that turns on and off 3g

why would you do it this way?

You can disable roaming data in the settings, no need for 3G disable.

No there isn't - that only works for the GSM networks.

I, too, would like a nice widget for enabling/disabling data. When I get down to 10-15% battery life left, I would like to be able to drop into "call only mode", where all it can do is make and receive phone calls. Easiest way to do that would be to disable 3G and 1X completely.

When your phone is struggling to get a 3G signal, it expends a lot of battery power trying to get it back. If you're in a well-covered area like a major city, this fix won't do much, but if you're in an area where 3G coverage can be sparse, this will make a big difference in your battery life.

I guess this is good if you only use it as a phone....but if you don't care about high speed data why get a droid? Just get a chocolate or something.

Ok so was checking out the phone info and on my screen it shows GSM service: In Service and under the options for the cmda choice it shows gsm. I thought the phones were only cdma? Is the phone info the same on both the droid and the milestone?

+1.... Someone always seems to piss me off on the phone or I just happen to have a phone in my hand when I get pissed off. This is the exact reason I carry insurance on my phones. This makes me laugh because I really dont feel any better after I smash a 300-600 dollar phone.

Cool. What do the other options mean?

Also, is there a way to manually update my prl?
