how to delete(cancel) voicemail contact??

I've got a droid phone. So far loving every bit of it except I have an annoying "voicemail" problem with me.
I use a voicemail dialing about *86. I have to dial my password to listen to my voicemails. The problem is here.
When I miss my calls if someone calls me, it will direct that person to my voicemail. But I don't want that. I want my phone to ring longer.
Is there a way to cancel/delete my voicemail machine so that my phone will ring longer???
I have to tried dialing *86, but i couldn't find anything about cancelling.

I've called Verizon a few times and had them turn voicemail off on a few phones. That way no one could leave a voicemail.

With voicemail taken off the account, the phone rings about 15-20 times.
