How to avoid spending the full $299 upgrade rate at Verizon on Day 1

I believe that CA does the same thing when buying a vehicle. If the car has a sticker price of $20,000 and you have a $10,000 trade-in, you pay sales tax on the $20,000. I know that in most states (PA and NY for sure) that you only pay sales tax on the $10,000 difference.

Yeah, here in PA if I said you only paid [wink wink] $1500, for a $10,000 car, you would pay $90 at 6% sales tax... Not that I ever did that...

Does anyone think the following approach would work for people like me who are stuck in the middle of a 2-yr contract for people who do not wish to pay the full retail price for the phone:

1. Add a line to your family plan and purchase the phone when they have some really good deals on Amazon or such site (for $0.01 or something like that)
2. Add just a limited data plan and the increase in monthly charge would be just $20
3. Then pay the ETF only to disconnect the newly added line at the end of the month, but retaining the primary line.
4. Then use your new Galaxy nexus as the primary device - thereby paying $350 + $20 for the phone ONLY totally instead of the $650+ You can even sell your previous phone if you feel like and get some more money in your pocket.

There is no mention of the additional ETF you're talking about other than the Verizon ETF itself. Do you have any link where it mentions about the Amazon's ETF ?

I know that CA was trying to get Amazon to charge sales tax, but I'm not sure on the status of that. But I can tell you that I've yet to be charged sales tax from Amazon. That would really suck too...I purchase A LOT from Amazon.

Not that purchasing from Amazon is a bad thing, but at those tax rates your almost forced too.

You would be better off to terminate the "old" primary line (thus paying a lower EFT - which is based on months remaining in the term) but you would have to use the new phone number.
Or maybe even smarter would be to keep both the old and new line. Transfer the GNex to your primary line the day you get it, put a "basic" phone on the "new" line (for $10/mo), then when the primary line's discount is available, buy another top end phone heavily discounted (iPhone 4s for $199) and sell on ebay (for $500-$600).

To be honest with you, I've exhausted myself waiting for this phone...I have no more enthusiasm to give to the g-nex.

I have sbf'd back to a PE4.2 (froyo) and my D1 is doing ok for now. Unless there’s some sweet deal at launch day, I will not be purchasing for $299. I will wait until I get a markdown or a worthwhile bundle for that price...funny thing is if it was released last Friday as the likely rumor said, i would've picked it up at for 299 without hesitation.

Here here! Although, I wouldn't pick PE 4.2; I tried that, but as I'm very use to Gingerbread now going back to Froyo would be difficult.
