If I want to edit files in my /system folder with 7zip, how do I make a copy of it to do so? Can I simply use Root Explorer to make a copy of the folder to my /sdcard folder, or is that impossible because the phone is using some of the files in the /system folder? I tried to use Root Explorer to do just that, copy and paste the /system folder to the /sdcard folder, but a half an hour passed and it wasn't done; is that because the /system folder is so large (hence I'm being impatient), or because you can't copy the /system folder to the /sdcard folder using Root Explorer, while the phone is on? Is there a way to see the /system folder on your PC while connected via the USB cable, or is the /sdcard folder the only one you can see?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just tried root exporer for this. Got impatient as well and rebooted, then checked my sdcard and a good chuck of system was on there. Not sure how long it would take to get it all or if getting it all is possible. You could try digging through a nandroid backup, depending on how technical you are.

I make copies of my system/app folder all the time along with other key system files if you are trying to copy the whole system at once, be patient, that would take a while

Here is how you can do it with adb

    adb pull /system/app C:\pathyouwanttosaveto
    adb pull /system/framework C:\pathyouwanttosaveto

That should cover everthing you need to copy and edit with 7zip in the system.

    BOO YOW! dancedroid

Thanks thebowers, I appreciate it, had a feeling eventually I would have to install Android SDK and use adb commands, depending on how involved I'd be getting in this addiction! That was a heck of a lot faster than Root Explorer (although to be honest I don't know by how much since I didn't even let Root Explorer finish!).

    Cheers to everyone!

Use adb -- its essential. Root Explorer is good, but not as good as adb if you are going to do some serious modding.
