How do i change the droid market account

i bought a used droid eris and flashed it to metro pcs. I didn't know absolutely need an account for the market. There is already a gmail account associated with the market app from the previous owner so i don't know the password to it. How do i change this account to mine? I don't want to have to factory reset the phone. Please tell me there is some other way to do it.

Settings > Accounts & Sync, select the existing Gmail and click Remove Account
