how can I improve reception?

I want to get a nexus big time BUT I don't want to constantly lose signal like others are experiencing. Is there a way to improve signal especially in a new 4g area like mine?
I don't want to get it then regret it later.
Especially IF I buy on craigslist. There once you buy it you are stuck with it.

with mine... reception was spotty... but with the newer radios... that's not an issue for me...(can't speak for 4g personally... but talked to a few people with it.. and the latest jb radios... are doing excellent on 4g)

As long as it's still under the 1yr manufacturers warranty Verizon will honor that. They don't ask where the phone came from.
