I've been able to turn this off on every previous phone, including my previous droid maxx (this is a replacement maxx, refurbished; read: someone else's previous issues).

I've attached two screenshots, one of the wifi settings and one of the PITA pop up.

It doesn't matter what app, as long as it needs internet.

What am i missing?

The WiFi settings screen looks exactly like my Maxx. Maybe the WiFi notification is coming directly from the app itself? What app is that open in the background? Maybe in it's Settings?

It's multiple apps. Was even looking for a setting for apps globally to prompt for wifi

Looks like Carbonite failed and is asking if you'd like to try again over Wi-Fi?

yeah, but that's a whole other issue. Carbonite is pretty good and has been on it trying to resolve it. In the end, it always works.

I was factoring in what looked like poor signal according to your 3g bars, possibly the phone suggesting try Wi-Fi for a better signal.

I had the same WiFi pop up notification show up on either my Maxx or my wife's Moto X (can't remember which one) and if I remember correctly it was in a particular app menu....a setting like "always check for WiFi"...or something like that. I'll keep digging around my Maxx and hopefully jog my old, tired memory.
