Welcome to the Forum. Open the e-mail app got to settings and to notifications. You should be able to change it there.

If I open email account, there is no setting to open. Sorry I don't know anything about this phone. Thanks for your patience,

I don't have a Droid X and can't walk you through it, but there must be a setting in the email app that turns notifications on or off.

Try the user guide. There has to be a way to get to the email notifications.

Welcome aboard...what email app are you using? You should also be able to change your notification sound via system setting if you cannot find a setting specific in the app (which to locate in almost any app, you will need to press the menu button - 3 lines - and look for the notification setting.)
