I don't know about everyone else but I'm very disappointed with all of the images in the gallery. I am talking about the quality of the images, I may not been looking hard enough but it seems that almost every image is a .jpg (yuck). Most people do not notice, but I have been working with images for a long time and it kills me when I see low quality images that could easily be saved in a better format. After all, hard disk space is no longer much of an issue.

I have found a few good wallpapers that I like to use, and am going to start formatting more desktop wallpapers into the Droid resolution and I will be saving them as .png and labeling them as HQ in the gallery. Please do the same if you have any high quality .png images. It does make a huge difference on the phone display.

When uploading HQ images, add "HQ" to the tag list.

what am I doing wrong that I can't figure out how to download these? it says the file's dimensions are 960x854, but I always end up with 600x600 or whatever size is actually on the page.. I can't click on the image to get the higher res version, and there's no download link.

When I first downloaded some wallpapers and added them, they looked like crap until I figured out that you had to stretch the crop box. I think people are downloading it and just adding it, which, even with a HQ picture will look like crap. Just a thought.

Great work! I just wish I could find more wallpapers like the default Droid wallpapers. I love the lines/checker patterns throughout the default wallpapers.

I was able to do this from day one without installing any other apps. (It was the first thing I did on the phone, and it was a .png.)

    Try this:
    Long press on the desktop
    Select Wallpapers
    Select Pictures
    Select the .png image
    Crop

    .jpg quality :(
    Where did you find them?

From the "flan" file (hacked Nexus One), it also had all the Nexus One audio files (ringtones, notifications, etc), but I didn't notice anything new at a glance.

Awesome Pics.... I too, enjoy a super high quality image. My company produces large format digital prints near photo quality at 8 feet tall, so I've grown accustomed to rich, vibrant colors and super fine detail and can now enjoy seeing that as background images on my Droid. Thanks again!

The problem I see is that PNG files saved in 24bit are going to be huge. A JPG background saved in a good high quality format is around 150k whereas the PNG is going to be around 1.2megs.

The only time anyone might be able to tell the difference on something as small as this phone is where there is a large gradient involved in a small color span. This is where banding usually takes place in a JPG.

I am going to do a little experiment with some of the HD photos in my gallery as I still have the originals in Photoshop.

Here are three versions of the same image saved in three different formats.

    1. PNG24
    2. JPG at it's highest setting
    3. JPG at 50% (which unfortunately most people use)

Make sure you enlarge them to see the differences. It's obvious the medium quality JPG is unacceptable but imagine the HQ jpg and the PNG on something as small as your phone. I seriously doubt you would be able to discern any difference between the two.

Also please remember people that you can't simply open a JPG and save it as a PNG and get an improvement! You must start with a high quality image (PNG, RAW, TIF, etc) or your efforts are futile. I did notice that in this image of your HQ library there is some serious banding in the background.

Blue World HQ (.png) - Droid Wallpapers, Droid Gallery

I took a wallpaper that has a lot of gradient AND opportunity for artifacting. I had originally uploaded it in JPG so I created a PNG from the original HD image. The JPG is 139k, the PNG is 1.23megs. Both have been posted to my gallery.

Treasure Island in HD - Droid Wallpapers, Droid Gallery

Treasure Island in HD HQ - Droid Wallpapers, Droid Gallery

I work in the graphics field and personally, the difference is almost indiscernible on my phone.

thanks for the comparison. When I export my wallpapers to JPEG I either have it at 80% or 100% quality. So I guess it doesn't really make a difference anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to play with all of this atomicwedgie. I understand what you mean about having to take the images from a HQ source. Most of these images I stole from another forum and have been using them on my phone because I noticed a difference between them and the ones in the gallery. I should have said that I did not create the first few images myself. All future images that I upload will be from higher quality sources.

Also, in reference to your post about conserving disk space. On the Droid specifically, space should not be too much of an issue when dealing with wallpapers, unless you store a ton on your phone. I store all of my images on a personal server and just download them as I please. This thread is for the "picky people" like me who just want the best quality they can get, even if it is not much of a difference.
