Like Hook said, even the Droid 1 is still a high-end phone. To me, a high-end phone is one with a minimum of a Cortex A8 processor core and a 480x800 or higher screen res.
Does the D2 have that?

Yup. Droid 2 has the TI OMAP3630 chipset, which is an improved 1GHz variant of TI's Cortex A8-based line of SOCs (to compare, Droid 1 has the OMAP3430 chipset, underclocked to 550MHz)

It also has a resolution of 480x854 pixels.

Good enough to get "gingerbread" when it comes out?

It better be. It fulfills the minimum requirements for gingerbread. Its a top of the line phone in verizons Droid line up. Im certain the Droid x will be getting gingerbread, why not the Droid 2 since they're almost identical?

I'm not sure after gingerbread. we'll most likely still be getting maintenance updates from motorola updating the droid 2. but as far as getting an upgrade for the OS, nobody knows since google hasn't released the minimum requirements for the rumored Honeycomb version.
