Help with dial pad screen background please.

Alright so im fairly decent with my stock droid however.... I am wondering is there a way to modify the call incoming/out/dial pad screen without rooting your phone?(Its updated to most current update with blueglow theme from gde Motorola droid 1)

Also Im a bit afraid to root my phone cause I have heard that if you mess up it will NEVER turn back on? True or false?
