HELP! my droid overheats when it charges and because of this i cant charge

the past few days as i plugged in my droid it would charge to about 50% and then overheat and go down to 20% so i need to know what i should do

When that's happened to me I turn the phone off for a little while and then power it back on. After that I plugged it back into the charger.

Are you using it when it's on the charger? How are you charging it, USB or wall charger? Are you rooted/overclocked?
Need some more info to help you out ...
