i know this is a pretty specified request so i am including a picture. i have a Dodge Ram and i tried a few ebay mounts and they either broke or wouldnt fit anywhere. i was driving to work this morning and saw someone with my truck had their GPS device on top of the steering column. figured this would be a good spot for my Droid X

please help me find the best solution for me. here are a few pics of the area i would like to put it..

suction mount?

apply a mount with some 3M double sided tape? (that's how I mounted mine in my Jeep to the dashboard) The mount covered where the adhesive was so it looked like it was part of the dash. And it's not really tape, it's more of a adhesive gasket that is sticky on both sides, but still made by 3M.

no. All it was....

This mount (I hate the car dock feature of the phone and don't use my phone horizontally so I wanted in to stand vertically)... took the flat, square piece on the bottom right and covered the back with the double sided tape/gasket. I pre drilled and screwed in some tiny course thread screws thru a piece of sheet metal (into the dash) that I cut to the shape of the square mount. I did this because my dash has a honeycomb design to it and I wasn't getting enough surface area for the adhesive to stick properly. The piece of sheet metal gave a great surface for adhesion. There's no need for the piece of metal if you don't have the adhesion issue I was having.

Simple as; apply the square piece to where you want it, then the bracket locks into that piece.

They probably don't have anything for the location you're interested in mounting to but have to looked into Panavise's brackets? They're sturdy and I've never had problems with them in any vehicle so far. You'll need a device mount to attach to the Panavise bracket.

Do you have room above the steering column without blocking your gauge cluster? The device in the photo appears to be much much smaller than a Droid X.

Not sure how well this will work with being able to see your speedometer etc... but the Motorola Car Dock that I got for my Droid 2 came with a piece to attack to the dashboard that should work on the steering column. I'd assume that the Droid X car dock has the same thing.

Here is my mount on my 07 Ram

Not sure if this works for you, but this is how I mounted mine. Works if you have that storage pocket open below the HVAC controls. This is how I mount my Droid.
