I was just given a pair of Apple earbuds with a built-in microphone. When I plug it into my Thunderbolt, it brings up the headset/microphone icon (versus just the headset icon when I connect one without a microphone); however, no one can hear me when I'm using it. Is there some sort of setting somewhere in the menu that I need to configure? Maybe an app I cna download?

Or is it simply a faulty headset?

Try hard reset that helped me when I had microphone issues once.

There is no settings you need to change so if that doesn't work I'd say the head phones aren't compatible.

No they aren't compatible with the thunderbolt. I bought a pair of beats by Dr Dre that did the same thing. So I returned exchanged them for a new pair that also didn't work. Verizon refunded my money and afterwards I read that the headphones that control iphones will not work properly.

If they can't hear you with headphones then must didn't get mr1, that was an issue it did fix. It no longer mutes itself with headphones plugged in, it just reboots while you are talking to them.
