Having a problem with SKYPE

I loaded the app for Skype but it does not show that any of my contacts are on line. On my computer it show that many are on line. Is anybody else having this problem? My carrier is Verizon and they say its a third party problem not theirs. Does anybody know how to rectify the problem? Thanks.
