Has your Droid ever just started typing all on its own...?

Last evening we transported a 17 month old child to the hospital in great distress - with a high fever and flu-like symptoms. In an effort to distract her, I whipped out my handy Droid and selected the movie "Ice Age" to keep our patient attentive throughout the half hour ambulance trip to the hospital in Burlington. Once the patient was offloaded, I began my tasks of disinfecting the rig and all equipment used and or touched by our feverish patient... including my Droid. I spritzed a palm full of hospital grade antimicrobial foam into my palm, and promptly took to wiping it across the surface of the Droid, including the screen (but making sure not to get any of the foam into the ear bud port). Just as soon as the foaming agent came in contact with the screen - it went bonkers... causing the screen to act all on its own - texting gibberish in one long strand - as if being operated by a ghost. I didn't catch-on fast enough... and just thought it was a software issue. So much so, I re-rooted the device, clearing the cashe and system memory, and installed a clean Froyo FRG01B ROM. Even AFTER the clean install, it kept throwing gibberish and duplicate text. Very annoying. It wasn't until the second rebooting and installation that I figured it out... seems the antibiotic foam leaves an odd surface film that causes the signals to and from the screen to go haywire. It all stopped immediately after I wiped the screen with an alcohol wipe. Amazing! I wonder how many other people have experienced similar problematic results that just (for me...) required a simple cleaning.

Feel free to pass along this handy bit of information... in the hops it helps some other truly frustrated Droidite.

    Sincerely,

It looks like there are a number of chemicals that the Droids are allergic to...

Same thing happened to me a week ago -- but in my case, I had gone running with Droid in armband but for the first time had the screen rotated so it was facing my arm rather than the window in the armband. I was using My Tracks so as soon as I was done running, about an hour and very humid, I pulled the phone out to stop recording -- couldn't even get past the lock screen at first, it was just going haywire as you describe -- I figured the screen was shot so, for the first time, I installed sbf, un-rooted & and prepared to return it for an exchange -- but I guess at that point I had finally cleaned the screen enough times that it started working again! So I re-rooted and it's been working fine ever since. I guess in my case the sweat/armband combo had the same effect as the disinfectant --

Yes, it has happened to me MANY times. I cannot figure out a pattern, why or when it happens.

Very frustrating when if happens. It usually can be fixed by rebooting, sometimes it takes a couple reboots. Many times I have to remove the battery because I cannot get a key stroke in.

Wow... not cool. I imagine moisture was the culprit here - the disinfectant spray and sweat from the armband. I usually keep my phone in my pocket with the screen facing my leg when I'm sweating outside - using the logic that moisture would reach the two watermarks under the battery cover. I guess that shouldn't be my main concern. :)

Crappy thing is... now that Assurion is replacing our Droids with the choice of an LG Ally, Motorola Devour, and HTC Eris - gotta be that much more careful. One of those three crap phones just wouldn't cut it for me...

    1. Nice to see ya back around Adamz.

    2. Ally, Devour, Eris is really the choices? None of them are comparable.
I'll make a scene should I need a replacement and those are my choices.
    Unacceptable IMO.
