will charge but gets very hot!

Mine worked for 2 months of heavy use, then visible signs of slight melting occured on plastic that fits in lighter. It no longer charges. Don't think it hurt the droid though. I would use charging sparingly.

Is it confirmed that this works with the original Motorola Droid in regards to charging?

The Griffin site advertises its compatibility with Android phones but only has the Droids 2 and X on the page.

If not, is there another good charger/transmitter for the Droid 1?

USB is USB. It doesn't need to specfically support anything. Just be aware that USB is limited to 500mA which may not be enough if you're using your GPS receiver.

Same as any car charger, right?
