I'm in the same situation. I have a GV # now but I don't know how to get my verizon # to forward my messages there.

Log into your GV account and go to settings and then the phones tab and you can register your verizon #, then select Activate voicemail for that number. That might not be exactly right but it's pretty self-explanatory when you see it.

To forward a verizon phone I dialed *71(then gv number) SND

Thanks so much dbronstein and dunefreak91910! dunefreak91910 got it perfectly right, but when I did as dbronstein said just to be curious. I went to the phone tab in setting on google voice. but the phone was already activated, then I noticed the "activate google voicemail for this phone" link right next to it. I swear I'm not a blonde... I just play one on tv Thanks again peeps!
