This may be a realy dumb question, so please take it easy on me, but I just got GV yesterday and was wondering if you can use your number giving by Google to make free calls. Is this possible at all? And I saw on a search that you can do it by combining all sorts of other apps, but I jsut want to know if GV by itself can place calls without using minutes. Thanks!

only way so far is to use google voice with sipgate and sipsorcery. It's not really that complicated. Also, I think adding your GV number to your family circle or whatever works too.

I've been using GV since august of last year. Had it first on my myTouch with TMobile, then when I switched to VZW and bought the Droid, had it ever since. Had the myfaves with tmobile and it by adding the actual number google voice dials (NOT *your* google voice number), you get free outgoing calls. Works same with Verizon's Friends and Family.

Make sure to put the access number that google voice dials out with though...

    Here's one tutorial for you:

    Google Voice App Tutorial

I had read another some months ago, but can't remember where it was. A few minutes worth of googling should find you several more.

Yes, with Verizon set up the google voice number on Friends & Family. Voila, no plan minutes used.

Nope. You do have to have a minimum plan though:

What plans are eligible for Friends & Family? Friends & Family is available on Nationwide Single Line plans with 900 Anytime minutes or more, as well as Nationwide Family SharePlans with 1400 Anytime minutes or more.
    Nationwide plans offer:

    • Unlimited Mobile to Mobile to over 80 Million Verizon Wireless subscribers
    • Unlimited Nights and Weekends
    • Access to Mobile Web
// And yes, as the other poster said, make sure you add the Google Voice connecting # to the F&F plan.

You can administer your Friends & Family numbers with the "My Verizon" app available from the Marketplace.

Yeah see thats why i cant add it i guess due to the fact that my plan right now is a family share with 700 minutes and im not going to up the plan just to make "unlimited" free calls when out of all that time me and my fiance only use around 100-150 max mins a month combined.

yeah if you aren't using it, no reason to pay for it. I run a business so I rack up a ton of o out of netowrk calls, so F&F and Google Voice is a complete savior for this.

Not by itself. It definitely uses voice minutes for calls as it is not VOIP. There are quite a few suggestions in this and the countless other GV threads here. I highly suggest checking out the other threads if you're new to it.

I read in another thread here in this forum, that you need to enter the access number that google voice dials, to your friends and family and not your google voice phone number. This way it will not count against your minutes.

When you dial out, pay attention to right above the pix of the person your calling. It will flash a number up there. That's the access number you use in your friends and family.

Now here's a thought: If I am using Google Voice to make all my calls, don't I effectively lose my "Unlimited Mobile to Mobile to over 80 Million Verizon Wireless subscribers" since my device is calling out using numbers assigned by Google and Verizon won't recognize that I'm calling another Verizon line?

    For outbound calls, yes.

Not any more. The outbound access number changes all the time now. Add your GV number to F&F and then use gvmynumber to force all calls out via your GV number.
