Here's an intriguing bit of tech. We aren't sure if this device is worth the price tag, but it seems worth checking out: https://on.google.com/hub/

If I wasn't an IT guy who enjoys tinkering in the web interface setup of my router that other people would be lost in and if I was in a position to start upgrading my home to make it smart, I might think this is a good investment.

Since I am an IT guy, I do kind of like the idea of how simple it seems to be to setup and manage for not technical people. Although, many routers these days come with software that walks you through the entire basic setup process.

If I had not just upgraded my system to a new all-in-one modem / router combo when I worked a deal with my ISP to lower my bill and get faster speeds I would probably buy one of these. I am pretty familiar with WiFi router setup & troubleshooting, but my wife & kids are not. This looks like it would be pretty simple for anyone to setup and maintain, with a simple & intuitive app. The app that comes with my router from my ISP is horrible and lacks many key features.

You don't want too many cooks in the kitchen though. Kids would give their devices priority on this thing, so would wife, then your speeds still suck. Haha

I think this router is awesome as it has Bluetooth and 802.15.4 which is the next gen WIFI band.

I should probably look into that, but as long as it's working, I really don't pay much attention to my router. I finally turned off MAC filtering after getting new devices became too annoying, but I don't broadcast my SSID. That's good enough for me. I get an average 40mbps, which suits our needs just fine.

I broadcast my ssid, my laptop doesn't like to connect if its not. I've never used Mac filtering because you can clone them so easily. I do have different authentication on each PC so if they get into my router they can't do anything on my PCs.
