You have to uninstall the system version of gmail first, either with Root Explorer or Terminal

Another way is to just rename the gmail.apk already on your phone, reboot and then download the update. I did that and it worked fine.

Root Explorer system/app Gmail.apk, delete it (or rename it to gmail.apk.bak) and reboot your phone, then download the Market version after it installs correctly you can go back into root explorer and delete the gmail.apk.bak if that's the route you chose

If it's giving you a read/write error tap the top right corner virtual button that toggles RW/RO

Doesn't ShadowROM come with the updated gmail app? I think it just 'thinks' your not up to date because it was included...

The gmail included in ShadowROM may have been an updated version, but the one available in the market is a newer version with additional features.
