Gmail not syncing well

Im having a problem with my gmail not telling me when I have new mail. Everytime I login I have to hit refresh to see new mail. I have the data push checked in settings. Is this a glitch or should I do something else?

Install the power control widget where you have room on a home screen. Make sure the sync button is on. This should fix your problem.
