Gmail can read / not write

I've run into a situation where Gmail is able to acquire messages from the server. However, if I try to perform any writeable actions, Gmail will not talk back to the server and honor those changes. Here are two writeable actions that do not work:

  1. Cannot send a message either by replying or by composing a new message. (They sit in the Outbox forever)
  2. Cannot update the read status of a current message

Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this?

Go in setting: applications: manage apps: all. Find gmail and wipe data.

Sent from somewhere...

Thanks for the speedy response. I tried your suggestion by going to Applications > Manage Applications > Gmail. Then I hit the "Clear Data" button, which seemed to have wiped the data (went from 4MB to 0). I opened Gmail, sent a test message and saw the "Sending Message..." notification appear (same as before). Then went to the outbox and noticed it was sitting there with the older messages that are queued up for being sent. My next step was to reboot the phone to see if that had any bearing... unfortunately not.

What do you suggest next?

well, now it works...after fiddling around with the phone some. The things I did different were:

* shut off my phone as opposed to rebooting it (via QuickBoot)
* wiped facebook sns
* wiped gmail storage
* removed facebook account
