my largest issue is the fact that if i brick my phone, i cannot afford another one, but the help is much appreciated, basically i need to convince myself that doing this is worth it...

You can always just use rsd to get back to stock. I wouldn't be too worried about bricking. Just follow the instructions and you should be all good.

Get the TBH app.....there is a good download in there. I have been running it since the day after the release and love it.

Team Black Hat. You should be able to find it in the market. Try restarting the phone before doing z4root. That might help.

so i decided because my phone was being slow in general, that i would factory reset, i did, no problems, and z4root worked successfully... now im in the final debate of whether to go with the gingerbread leaked rooted rom or stay with froyo rooted..

what apps will i need to do this (i know bootstrap recovery, is it by clockworkmod?)?

Bootstrap recovery should be the only one that you need. GB is way better than Froyo in my opinion.
