    Why don't they allow androids to display .gif images. I mean certainly my moto droid can handle it. What's the deal?

    They show in version 2.2, in the browser and email.

    I finally manually updated last night. I guess I should have looked at a gif before complaining.dancedroid

    Some of the older Android hardware wasn't really up to displaying GIFs. At least that's what Google's Android bug database says. With 2.2 they've enabled it depending on the device.
