Well I have another rainy weekend to sit inside and play with the new phone. Someone in an earlier post of mine mentioned there is a way to use the droid 3 with VZ as a wifi hotspot without rooting and without paying for tethering fees.

Anyone know of a good on-line guide or app that is required to walk me through how to do this? Would love to try it out this weekend.

You have to hack the wi-fi radio. It's not terribly difficult, but even a slight mistake could ruin your radio and you would not be able to use wi-fi anymore.

WOW! This looks way to scary for me. I'll file it away for another rainy day and who knows...maybe it will get easier in the future but I didn't realize it was this advanced. But thanks for sharing!

I think PDANET is more what I had in mind....looks like that will do the trick based on the write up in the marketplace...I'll give that a shot.

It's not worth it for me, just use bluetooth tether instead no root required. I haven't tried it but you may be able to bluetooth tether to one computer and then have that computer share the connection via its wireless card if you are looking to use multiple devices.

Is there some sort of bluetooth tether that allows you to use the phone as a wireless hotspot? If so, is it free (other than data use)? Not sure what that is exactly but if there is an app for it could you please fill me in. Thanks!

Is there an equivalent to PDANet for the hotspot feature?

You can do it built in to the phone, no extra software needed. just connect and use as internet connection. Specific instructions are different per bluetooth stack so it's hard for me to give you directions on it.

Not for the Droid 3. They locked the radio not just the software... so even alternate WiFi apps will not work because the radio itself will redirect you to the Verizon site. It's beyond the Android OS' control.

    Edit:
This does work, although it adds considerable amount of latency it's better than no internet I guess. My laptop has that stupid "Intel My WiFi" junk that does this as a built in feature, and I've done it on several occasions.

I have a rooted Droid 3. I have followed all the steps above. I get the green light at the top of the screen, but i cannot get the software version nor will it allow me to update anything with radiocomm.. can anyone throw me a bone to what might be causing this?

    Maybe Motorola drivers?

Did you make sure you hit the DEC toggle? I had that wrong and was stumped for awhile. Once done, it was pretty simple.

Are you checking for the sw version from to P2K 1 tab? You need to.

If you execute all the steps of the RadioComm hack properly, it should just work.

Can you describe what did or didn't happen after you tried the hack?
