Are there any apps for Droid Eris that act as a free way to text? I still can't believe I have to pay to text someone especially when I pay for an unlimited data plan. Didn't know if such a thing existed, just checking, thanks.

I was under the impression the "internet" data plan and texting were separate. Maybe I am mistaken?

I just checked, and I have a "Smartpack" plan, so maybe that's why.

My text plan is 500 "any" texts + unlimited "IN" (m2m) texting....

I don't have a need for an unlimited plan as I use Google Voice for those who text me most, but aren't part of the "IN" plan.

I don't have a text plan and every one is charged at 20 cents - doesn't take long for that to add up! I don't send many texts, but the additional fees were annoying.

I had texting disabled so I can't send or receive through the text part of the system and I have Google Voice set up to take care of it. Result: No hidden charges and full texting capabilities.

Hmm, never heard of that. I have one of the lower voice plans (450 mins) and the lower web/email plan ($30), never had this issue. I probably send 120 txt's (or lower) in a month. When I check my VZW account, it says I have unlimited texts.

I guess you've had it a while as currently, all text plans are extra.

Or for 10 bucks you can get 500 texts of any kind and unlimited to Verizon, which should pretty much be enough for anyone.

Not really. I just moved to a brand new contract (from my family's old family plan) in June. Then, I upgraded to a Droid early and began another new 2 year contract. Got my Droid the second week it was out.

I use Google Talk and Gmail. Not a perfect substitute - but no extra cost with them.

"WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.

In addition to basic messaging iPhone, Android and BlackBerry WhatsApp Messenger users can send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages".

This isn't nearly as feature rich as Handcent but it has more features than anything else Ive used thats free.

If anyone knows of any other text apps please feel free to chime in.
