Let's face it, you've probably (definitely) lost all the files on your card forever without a backup, but that won't affect any future rom installs I don't think.
It seem like you should just be able to drag the nandroid (folder contents) from your PC over to your fresh SD card, then do a backup the next time you flash a new rom, as long as your phone is running fine. On the other hand, I could be completely wrong so take it with a grain of salt.

Let me add a caveat by saying I'm a nooby, but I will still offer my help.

I would say that is ok to do. But, you won't be able to recover any previous versions of your phone (without a backup) you'll just be backing up what you have installed now, so yes I would think that is safe and would work.

    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...ng-only-sprecovery-terminal-emulator-zip.html

The above link has a walk through to do the following:

    Root your phone
    install sprecovery
back up your current installation....icons, apps, os, etc
    install roms
get your phone back to stock out of the box condition.

With a totally blank card you can just follow the steps you need to get a nandoid directory back on your card with either your current setup backed up or with a "like-new" config backed up.
