After having to answer many questions, billy and I have decided to make an faq thread for pl3x. We will be adding to this as we continue to get asked the same questions repeatedly. What exactly is pl3x? Pl3x is a "from source" Rom currently compiled from CyanogenMod with many other features added on top. Most of the extra features are made by BillyGalbreath, but some are made by others (see changelog for details) and implemented into Pl3x for your convenience. What does "from source" mean? From source simply means it was compiled by the developer from source code, instead of just adding things on top of a leaked/official prebuilt rom (FRF57, FRF84b, FRG01b, etc). There are NO build numbers on a from source Rom. The official "build" is technically "MASTER" instead of an "FRFxx" but we cannot use this in the build.prop otherwise we run into issues with certain apps like Market and Facebook. Compiling from source allows us to make changes to the base Android OS (operating system) otherwise not possible by using a leaked or official build. What is the build.prop file I keep hearing about? The build.prop file is located on your device at /system/build.prop and is a simple text file containing variables of strings (text) that the Android OS needs and uses, such as the build version, codecs to use, fingerprint id for market, default sounds, cdma and other vital info that the device needs to work properly. What about the market fix? The market fix is NOT supported by Pl3x and we strongly advise against using it. This "fix" simply fakes a few variables in the build.prop file to make the device think its running 2.1 Eclair. This then allows Market to show us all supported apps known by Google to work on the Moto Droid running 2.1 Eclair. However, we are NOT running 2.1 Eclair so this is definitely going to make us run into other issues. The market is designed to present you with compatible apps for the OS on the device you are running. If your favorite app is missing from Market (or wont install from a backup) then its because its KNOWN by Google to not work right, if at all (Slingbox will install, but will FC on start. Other apps will install, and run, but will FC on certain settings, etc etc). Who develops the rom? BillyGalbreth develops the roms. Gibby and droidman101 watch, help, and suggest things. We're helped by others in our irc channel ranging from advice to suggestions to actual code contributions. Where can I find you on IRC? What is IRC? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Its just a network (sometimes made up of multiple servers) that contains a bunch of channels (a.k.a. chatrooms) that you can join simultaneously or individually. We are located on the Freenode IRC Network (freenode.net) and our channel is #Pl3x Wipe or no wipe? Pl3x recommends that you try installing without wiping first. Worst case scenario is that you get a bootloop or some apps FC. If you run into these issues (or any others) then reboot instal recovery and perform a SINGLE wipe (re-installing the Rom is not needed) and reboot. If problems persist ask us on the main release thread, or join us on IRC. My Apps Force Closes! Why?! (weatherbug, etc) Some apps have a known compatibility issue on 2.2 Froyo. If you have performed the Market Fix then you are S.O.L. until the developer of the app releases an update thats compatible with Froyo. If you have not performed the market fix please ask us on the release thread, or join us on IRC. How do I use built-in overclocking? From your Home Screen go to Menu -> Settings -> Pl3x Controls -> CPU Settings. From there you can se the min/max frequencies of the kernel and the cpu governor. These settings indeed saved and set on boot MUCH earlier in the boot cycle than SetCPU sets them. This results in a MUCH faster bootup time. Is SetCPU compatible with Pl3x's Native OverClocking? Yes. In fact, we encourage you to use both! Our OC support sets on boot MUCH earlier than SetCPU does, so this brings us a MUCH faster boot time. SetCPU brings to the table Profiles which allow you to control speed/governors depending on battery percentage and/or heat. SetCPU and it's profiles will override Pl3x's native overclocking after the device is fully booted up, so the two wont fight and drain your battery. What do I do if there's a problem? First, we suggest researching the problem just in case someone else has a solution. Second, try to repeat the problem. If it keeps happening, do a wipe. Third, if it doesn't work, report it on the release thread or join us on IRC. Fourth, DO NOT just post the problem and leave. We may need some more info from you, so stick around. How do I remove an app in /system? There are several ways of doing this. The first way to delete an app is root explorer. Navigate to /system/app and find the file you want to delete. Then, mount system r/w. Next longpress the app you want to delete and press delete. Finally, mount the system r/o(you might have to reboot after this for the changes to be noticed). The second way is to use a terminal emulator. Download the app "terminal emulator" from the market. Open it and type: su sysrw cd /system/app ls (this should give you a listing of the apps in /system/app) rm yourapphere.apk sysro sync reboot Your phone will then reboot. The third and final way to delete an app from /system/app is adb. cd to your tools folder adb shell su sysrw cd /system/app ls (this should give you a listing of the apps in /system/app) rm yourapphere.apk sysro sync reboot Your phone will then reboot.
