Phone Information:
Motorola Droid MOTA855
Build: ESE81
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernel: 2.6.29-omap1-g7fa8788 android-build@apa26 #1

Issue:
Using Nandroid to do a Simple or Advanced backup I get the status 31 error.

Steps Taken To Resolve Issue:
Redid SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf using RSD Lite - Completed and PASS
Still Errors

Format of SD card using the Droid
Still Errors

Format of SD card using the Droid
Redid SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf using RSD Lite - Completed and PASS
Still Errors

Removed SD card
Still Errors

I have tried both Simple and Advanced backup, but both continue to error with a status 31.

I tried a fix from another post using a terminal, but it won't load the su. When I type in su it says permission denied so I am unable to run the below command.
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-0.99.3.img

Any other tips on what I can try?

To add to what I have been doing. These are the steps I have been following from the Stock 2.1 to 2.2 Froyo steps on this forum.

Install SPRecovery:

1. Make sure your battery is fully charged.
2. Make sure you have downloaded and installed the USB drivers and RSDlite.
3. Download the SPRecovery SBF: SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf
4. Turn off your Droid and hold up on the d-pad, then press the power button for 5 seconds.
5. You should see a black screen with the text Bootloader on your screen.
6. Connect your droid to your pc and let windows install the Flash interface driver.(Under Transfer Mode: you should see USB for this to work)
7. Once the driver is installed and working open RSD Lite.(Vista and 7 users need to run it as Administrator)
8. Click the button next to Filename(has ... in it)
9. Locate and select SPRecovery_ESE81
10. Now select SE Flash under Model and click Start.
11. It should reboot your phone and say 100% complete in RSD Lite.
12. Close RSD Lite and SPRecovery should be install.
Create Backup:(I always create backup just to be safe)

1. Turn off phone and turn on while holding x.(hold x before and after turning on the phone)
2. You should see Welcome to SPRecovery in the middle of the screen.
3. Using the D-pad select backup/restore(left is up and right is down to select use center button)
4. Select Advanced Nandroid backup
5. Select Set backup name and type a name pressing enter when done.(example: stockfullbackup)
6. Now select backup CACHE, MISC and RECOVERY.(all options should have an * next to it)
7. Select Perform backup
8. Once complete Reboot and backup your SD card to your PC.

I basically tried to set the device back to default by uninstall all applications and updates. This still did not resolve the issue. I am not sure where to go from here unless someone else may have some tips on what to do/try.

I rooted prior to this process so I do not have first hand experience.

Just to be clear -- do you believe that you have successfully rooted your phone and have SPR installed? If so, try installing an older 2.1 rom. Hopefully, you will be successful then you can switch to a new 2.2 rom.

In the mean time I will see if I can get another member of the RS to weigh in.

Ahh ...last page, post 31 of this thread:

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...suggestions/20546-nandroid-error-codes-4.html

It still gives u errors ?

ROM Manager has an option to format the SD Card. That might work since u will be formatting it in recovery. But I think u need to be rooted to use ROM Manager. So the first thing to try is install the update.zip from that guide to install root. See if that works first. If this doesnt work see below.

Do you have another SD Card to try to see if its the card? Or try formattng the card on the PC, then re formatting it in the Droid.

From my original post. I did go ahead and try to format the SD card using my PC then format with the droid again, but that still didn't work.

Also, here is the recovery info:
Android System Recovery (2e)
Patched by SirPsychoS (0.99.3b)

I am still getting the status 31 error

My only thought -- download a different rom(Succulent Desire, Simply Stunning, Cyanogen) and try to install via SPR

0.99.3b is what you want to be using for sprecovery, its the latest, has been out for months. You are all set there.

Maybe sprecovery just installed sort of funny? Use rsd lite to install it again or grab a copy from elsewhere and try again. There is a link to a copy in my signature, first post in that thread. Off to bed, will peak in the morning and hopefully you'll have it solved by then. Good luck.

Ok, got it fixed and this is how I had to fix my issue:

Remove the SD card and put it into a thumb drive adapater
Did a full format on the SD card using windows 7 64 bit
Did a quick format on the SD card just to make sure
Put the SD card back into the Droid
Held down the X button and powered on the Droid

I did a simple backup then did an advance with no issues.

I found something else that may be important.

After I got the backup completed I did the steps to start Froyo install, but it would not mount the SD card. I tried several times.

I put the files onto a different SD card and it worked just fine. I am not sure if there is something with the 16 Gb SD card that came from verizon, but something with the way the card is being seen by nandroid won't let it mount properly or what happens to the SD card after the phone loads for the first time.

I don't know much about it, but feel something is being written or changed that prevents it from mounting.

Just my thoughts, but hopefully this will help someone else similar in my position.
