ear speaker keeps going bad

Is it a common problem for the ear speaker on my droid to keep going out? I have gone thru 2 phones in 5 months. I dont listen to music or anything really just alot of texting, browsing, and maybe 1500 monthly minutes. Im not sure what to do about this.
It starts out sounding really distorted and gets worse over time. Within a few days i can barely understand anybody, they will all sound like insects
