First, are you rooted? I'm assuming you are not..

When asking for help, it would make it easier to answer questions if you include more information.. when you talk about copying files, please include on which system.. on your phone or your computer?

When you downloaded the file, did you rename it so that it was called "bootanimation.zip"?

You need to place the file, once renamed in the \android-sdk\tools folder on your PC.. this is the folder from downloading and installing the Android SDK. Your folder may not be named "android-sdk".

Once the file is in the tools folder, open up a cmd prompt and type the following commands:

    ADB shell
    ADB push bootanimation.zip data/local/
    reboot

EDIT: gnome_sayin beat me to it.

Alternatively, you can place the file on your SD card and run the following commands from a cmd prompt to achieve the same result.

    adb shell
    dd if=/sdcard/bootanimation.zip of=/data/local/bootanimation.zip
    reboot

Do not extract the animation. Leave the file in ZIP format (not RAR) on your memory card (or wherever you have chosen to load it from).

Do we do the command prompt on the droid or the computer? And if it's on the Droid, how would I go about doing that?

Ok. If file is on computer then you need to adb from command prompt. If file is on sdcard then you can do it either from computer or straight from phone. Doing it from the phone needs an emulator. Do a search in the market for one. If file resides on computer then type this in command..

    adb push /path/to/bootanimation.zip /data/local

If the file is on your sdcard then type this into either command prompt or the emulator (just leave off the adb shell part):
    adb shell
    busybox cp -f /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local
    exit

OR if you want you can always download a root accessible file manager (root explorer) from the market and then just that to copy and paste files to wherever...

Hmm can't get it going..I tried with the command prompt on the computer, but it didn't recognize the command ADB. Then I tried with a terminal emulator on my Droid and it said permission denied when trying to open the bootanimation. any ideas? A step by step instruction would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean what are people using? Honestly there are so many diff ways / variations people can change their bootanimations it wouldnt be worth writing a guide.

No a guide for installing...but I was just wondering (separate question) what people are using...Matrix, etc?

I never really was all that interested in it because it didn't seem worth the trouble seeing as how I rarely turn my phone on/off unless installing a new ROM.

Yea i know... Thats what I was trying to say. There are a ton of ways people can install bootanimations so not really worth it. You dont even have to have a rooted phone in order to change bootanimations. But if you wanna write something up thatd be cool... =)
