Dropped Calls

I'm not sure if this has been covered or asked before, so I apologize if this is redundant. Occasionally, when I place a call, put the phone to my ear, the call drops. Screen goes to black. I cannot "hang up" or do anything at all except go to the Home screen. If I place a call and use the speaker, all goes well. Anyone heard of this happening before? It doesn't happen to me all the time, but is extremely annoying when it does. Often I'm forced to use my land line when this happens. I've tried powering off, removing battery but nothing seems to help.
