Is it possible to use the Droid X without paying a monthly fee? I see it can access the internet through WiFi. I want to use it like an ipod touch, since I can afford the phone itself but not the thousands of $$$ it adds up to with the monthly fee over a couple of years.

I'm wondering what the phone does when you turn it on if you don't have a calling plan...

Nope, data plan is required for all smartphones.

Hmmm well you might be able to buy it somewhere but I think you're still supposed to activate it.

You could buy it for $569, not activate it, and use it on wifi.

You can absolutely use the droids without a plan. I have an extra droid eris that I use like that just because I can. Enjoy!

When I switched to the DroidX. I still kept getting emails and Internet using WiFi on my old Droid.

But once I wiped it to sell it, I couldn't access anything.

I guess I could add it back, then take it off.
