Droid x reset, lost all pictures...

My droid X has spontaneously reset itself twice, both times changing rigntones to random things, and this last time, deleting all the pictures I had taken. What is up? Why is this happening and can I prevent it?

Are they actually deleted our just not showing up in gallery?

Chances are they are deleted. A similar thing happened to my brother-in-law with his DInc and he lost all his recent pictures. Turns out that any Android that has internal storage uses it to store pictures as well as the SD Card. Yeah I know it is stupid. At least on the Droid when there is no SD Card present the camera app is unusable on the newer handsets you can pull the SD Card and still take pics/videos.
