Settings/privacy/factory reset will do the same thing. It will automatically take you into stock recovery

D2MIUI

You can use ES file explorer or asto to backup the app apk's. The free ones don't come back in the market after a factory reset.

Did you do a factory reset before or after the upgrade? If not then it could very well take care of your problems.

Did the factory reset last night and apparently the system is down for maintenance so I am without a phone until 11am since I can't activate it. Also screwed out of all the free apps I downloaded since I just now saw the post about backing up the apks. I did move all the ones that I could to my sd card so I should be ok right?

If they are on your SD, you're safe. That sucks about activation

Did manage to get the apps back from the marketplace and amazon. No overheating or rebooting yet. Sometimes it's a bit laggy but runs fine most of the time now.
