I got the the phone installed and setup in the device manager under pc mode...

I am at step 5 and dont understand how to Run "adb devices" in the command prompt... I do this and it tells me that the adb is not recognized as an internal or external command

what do I do from here...

i am not a computer novice, but they should write these instructions a litlte more clearly...

And neither is your problem. What operating system? Do you have the SDK installed? Is the SDK in your PATH?

Answering those will help to answer your initial question.

Windows 7 64
yes I have SDK installed and its in the path..

I got this part to work, but when I try to push the superuse apk to the sdcard, i get an acccess denied issue..

does this have to be in pc mode or can you do it in usb mass starage mode too?

When in pc mode I get no devices listed, in mass storage mode I get the device listed...

I have the exact same problem. Same platform and OS too.
PC Mode - no device
USB MSM - permissions error

Also USB debugging only pops up while in USB mass storage mode.
It does not show up in Phone Only mode.

I am definitely going to root my new Droid X, if nothing else than to get the damn bloatware off of it.

However, I really like the Froyo ROM I had on my original Droid. I am worried about rooting it now and not being able to get the OTA update when (if?) Verizon rolls out Froyo for the Droid X.

Am I being too paranoid?

So how bad can I screw up my phone if I do this wrong? Is there a way to back everything up before I try this?

Might be a mounting issue. Try this.

I too have this problem. The only way I have found to mount every time without exception is to use the Motorola Driver Installer and clean the drivers BEFORE i connect and try to mount phone.
Here is a link to installer.
USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola USA
First run Motorola driver installer exe.
Then select clean only and start.
then connect and mount.

vista os and mount droid

in charge only or ohone only mode you need to reenable usd debugging. under development. it's there. that should help

NOT accurate. I looked into it. I believe the article is being misread. There is no "kill switch" yet. It's being worked on for sure.

I wonder how much Moto paid to lock down the phone. Should have been working on releasing the 2.2 OTA's instead.

Or maybe this is better press. Sort of like announcing a poor man's app builder for Android then making folks wait for an invite ;)

Congrats once again to the devs in our community who strive to open the doors for the rest of us to enjoy our Android devices above and beyond the original plan.

Droid Does...Devs/themers/kernel cookers/etc does better!

thanks!
