I undid my root in anticipation of an update to gingerbread.
I can't stand it---I'm ready to re-root and just forget the whole thing.
Could there be some reason related to my z4root/un-root which could have rendered my phone ineligable for verizon's update?

PS--I'm too much of a wimp to try a custom ROM, or leaked version.

Not at all...they haven't released the update yet. Unless you haven't removed any bloatware from your phone, and everything is stock on it, you should get the update when it's released. If you don't, you'll have to SBF it to original .340 stock. That or use the maderstcok update zip to do it.

i was on liberty rom 2.0.1 rooted and awaiting gingerbread... i tried gb leaked from drewgaren lexlite and zapx... due to personal reasons, i went back to to 2.0.1 and now im running apex gb... it runs smooth, battery life is amazing as far as i can tell... id say go ahead and root and update to apex or another gb rom found here and itll be worth it!
just my .02
