Yes this utility will Root the Razr Maxx on ICS. VooDoo root keeper will let you temporarily backup and stop rooting so you can upgrade and then once done you can use VooDoo to restore root.

They are listed in the instructions at the beginning of the thread, just need to read them depending on what you are trying to do with the utility.

Hi everyone. I'm kinda new to this, I have a razr maxx On ics that I would like to root mainly for the free wifi hotspot feature. I'm not really sure what to do. I rooted my x2 and it was a piece of cake but this seems a little more complicated. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Not sure if you are up for it or not but this thread will walk you through both processes, and give you a good laugh.

    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-razr-maxx/217473-its-official-i-dislike-foxfi.html

Now it is a little long and you can sift through however you choose, but it will get you rooted and the hotspot hack.

I tried to download the 1.8 utility and I'm getting an "unexpected end of archive" error and a " the archive is either in unknown format or damaged" not sure what I'm doing wrong, just trying to download the file.

Not sure if you figured it out yet or not but I ran into similiar issues on a rooted GB - I used 1.6 to flash back to stock GB - once back to stock I did the OTA update to get into ICS and THEN I used 1.7 to get root back and I am now running Simplex 1.0 without any issues. Of course this thread is for 1.8, which was not out when I went through my rooting process so it was not available but I am sure it will work just as easily as 1.7.Good Luck and Thanks to Matt for all his great work.

Ok, I got the 1.8 utility to download and I have it unzipped on my desktop. I'm going to try this out tonight. If I just follow the steps in the "I dislike foxfi" thread above I'll be good to go? Is there anything else I should do? I just want to be rooted so I can get the free wifi hotspot feature. The above method will also give me a backup in case I want to unroot back to stock or if I have any issues? Thanks

Yes that thread will give you all you need for the root and hotspot, for a backup you can download something like Titanium Backup for APPS and settings. Then for unroot you can download Voodoo Root Keeper from the Play Store.

Sounds like you didn't extract all the files correctly, did you extract the whole zip file to the root of your C: drive?

used 1.51 to root on GB is it possible to use it to unroot while on ICS? was reading through the list of options and noticed the option to unroot has been removed. is it possible to unroot at all?

also, why should you be unrooted when upgrading OS? i wasn't aware you had to unroot and upgraded anyway, everything seems to be working fine. i had a few bugs here and there but they worked themselves out.

Some times you lose root when you upgrade, thus why people protect root before an upgrade with VooDoo Root Keeper and then restore it after. That APP can also delete your root as well if you so choose.

No looks like we are going to have to ride the ICS train until we get JB.

Sydman. I do not mean to troll....but this question relates to this post. On the .215 thread you mentioned that fastboot does not return the phone fully to "out of the box" like it does with sbf. Could you please elaborate? What is left behind? What does get restored?
I've looked at your posts and all seem to be spot-on, so I'd really appreciate your input. I've asked this question before and have received ambiguous/conflicting answers. If you wish to keep this thread on track feel free to pm me; however, I think it relates. Thanks in advance :)

Yeah I think the question is valid for people here that don't know. The fastboot files will return your phones SYSTEM files to a stock state, while leaving all your user installed APPS and settings alone.

So if you have Bootstrapper or Safestrap installed it will undo that and leave the stock recovery in place. Same thing for if you are on a custom ROM, it will erase all those modifications and leave your SYSTEM files stock but your APPS and stuff "should" be left alone.

Also I appreciate the kudos on my posts, glad to see they are helping at least one person!
