Droid Newbie

Hello all,
I'm a new droid user and new to this forum, in fact new to forums in general.I'm a bit techno challenged. I have a droid 2.
Not exactly sure how these forums work, but I suppose I'll find out.
A few questions off the bat. What is rooting? and why would I want to root?
I am trying to figure out how to set up a group in my contacts to send occasional group texts. Is there a simple way?
