In SPRecovery, there are 3 reasons for that error.
1- Make sure the file is in the root directory of your phone. if you are looking at it in Astro, the directory should be /sdcard
2- Your file is named update.zip.zip .File extensions are usually hidden by default in windows. Verify the file name using Astro file manager (or any file manager) on your phone.
3- You forgot to choose "Allow update.zip installation" before "Install /sdcard/update.zip (depreciated)"

so this is what I do.

i press the power and X , then volume plus down up volume. It moves me to Android System Recovery (2e)

then i have ( by the way I m trying to update that root file as in the video tutorial showed on this forum)

    reboot system now
    apply sccard:update.zip

    Error:

    install from sdcard...
    finding update package...
    opening update package...
    Verifying update package...
E? EOCD marker occurs after start of EOCD
    E: signature verification failed
    Installation aborted

Oh, ok, youre still trying to flash your recovery. Are you using a mac or a pc?

PS: I assume you are running 2.1 as well?

IIRC, you will need to use ABD to get root on 2.1. The video I think you are using is for 2.01. Follow this link instead:
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/hacking-faqs/39254-sbf-root-unroot.html

Its been a while since I rooted my phone, and I think the 2.1 OTA patched the exploit for root with the method you are trying to use.
