So the Droid 1 is pretty much at end of life at least for upgrading the OS. My understanding is that it does not meet minimum hardware requires. I've bee very interested in rooting my D1, but have been hesitant to do it. I understand the rooting process isn't that difficult and their are a lot of ROMs out to pick from as well plenty of documentation on it. So rooting is probably the next step for me. My concern how my apps will work or not. If I understand correctly they should work fine. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks so you are glad you rooted your D1? Any down side to it?

actually, you should have a greater choice of apps to choose from once rooted.

Mine works better rooted. And I am sure someone on this forum will find a way to patch over 2.3 to the D1. Just look at all the roms that people have put together, lots to choose from to make your phone brand new to you again.

Thanks, I guess the tough part will be selecting a ROM...

Picking a rom will be the tough part, but that's the beauty of the d1. I have d2 and although our core group of devs are very talented there's not much to choose from.

Be careful which version of a rom u pick. Some are marked as stable some are experimental or release candidates. BB v0.5 and UD 1.0 have worked great on my d1. Also check out overclocking 101.

I was looking at liquid too. What is average battery life? What does stock kernel max out at, does it have a governor?

Maxs out at 1100 and yeah has governer built in, also compcache built in. I run it at 400 min and 1100 max at on demand. For my heavy use "wireless tethering" downloading music, uploading pics, searching web. I tethered for 5 hrs and my temp never got above 90F and I was at 50% battery. Usual day of mobile browsing, facebook twitter forums app and call and texts and I can usually get home after a 10 hr day with 40% battery left. But every phone is different.

The stock kernel is by slayer, pretty sure you can use his kernels with any rom. It has made a huge difference in my phone. And a lot of peoples battery problems and tethering and over heating problems can be fixed by changing kernels. Don't know who else makes them but check out slayer, p3 droid, and chevyno1's kernels, lots of choices but the better chance you will find one that fits what your trying to achieve.

I would say you will see gingerbread on the OG droid only with Root and a custom ROM.
having the ability to Root and optimize the phone to run faster and smoother and do things you want/need is amazing...for that i LOVE the OG droid and it will take a pretty open device for me to replace it.

The most stable I've come across is the Charity Smoked Glass Rom running 2.2.1....
