    On a glass half-empty note -

I have a holster/pouch with a magnetic cover - it turns the dock mode one half the times I holster my Droid - This is extremely annoying because the display drains the power + one of the buttons can get pressed accidentally.

Did anyone find a way to completely disable/uninstall the Dock mode?

Not yet, but once the phone is rooted I'm sure you can remove the "Multimedia station" application.
..Alternatively you can open up your phone and try to remove the magnet (not recommended ;p)

Ah - it is not only about hacking the device - In the case of unwanted Dock mode in a magnetic holster a lot of regular users are going to have their batteries drained and might give Droid a bad rep.

If anyone from Google or Motorola is reading - please make sure you've added in settings "Enable Auto Dock Mode" or something - and BTW, make if OFF by default!

Why? There's no magnetic storage in the Droid at all. Even hard disks, which use magnetic media for storage, aren't affected by the sort of low-power magnets needed for this signaling and the flash memory used for the Droid's ROM, RAM, and the micro-SD card is effectively impervious to magnetic fields regardless of strength.

Nice. I did something similar and perhaps even more ghetto so that I could use dock mode with the phone still in its case (see pic).

I did find something interesting with the magnets though when I was building mine. How did you set up your magnets? I remember in the Gizmodo video, the guy said that he thought the mode (multimedia vs. car) was determined by the spacing between the magnets, however I'm using only ONE magnet. From what I can tell, the sweet spot is the same for both modes, but it's the pole of the magnet that is facing the Droid determines which mode it enters. Would any body be willing to verify this? Find the sweet spot, see which mode the Droid enters, then flip the magnet over and see if it enters the other.

Yup, it is the polarity of the magnet that determines what mode it uses. However, I'm not using a magnet. I'm using the dockrunner app to put it into docking mode. You can find it on the market.

Here is the thread about it: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-applications/1709-dockrunner-droid.html

Just remember, to return to normal you just run the app again. I have it set as a quick launch application.

flip the magnet over and it changes to the other dock mode.

With the flap from an old cardboard box and some electrical tape you get this:
