I am also considering a Bionic and posted over in that forum.

I'm interested in some opinions of owners. My son is 16. This would be his first smartphone. There are some good deals out there right now for a Charge ~$100 and the price is much less than Razr, Rezound or Nexus.

A 16 year old needs a 4G phone like he needs a Turbo charger. There are nice 3G phones out there with FEWER issues. I would suggest the HTC Incredible 2.

I wonder why you are so concerned with teenagers getting 3G phones. What's your point? 3G/4G costs me the same amount, I have no bandwidth limits and the 4G phones are typically newer and more powerful and cost about the same in most cases.

The point is that just because a device is 4g and dual core, that doesn't automatically make it better than one that is not.

The Bionic has serious flaws. I would have been flamed if I said that on the Bionic forum, but the camera, the pentile screen and headphone hiss are all flaws. The biggest issue though are the data drops. Every 4g phone can suffer from that, but the Bionic probably suffers more than others. Why buy a phone for speed if you need to do a factory reset twice a day to restore the connection?

A first one smartphone owner probably isn't a power user. The original HTC Incredible is still a great phone with few minor issues. The Incredible 2 is a step up from that.

I would choose reliability over the 4g network on a Bionic .

I would also recommend the incredible 2 (free on wirefly.com). Its a great phone with very good battery life. I can't and wont say anything bad about the charge because I have never even touched one but I do love my Dinc2. Also insurance from wirefly.com is only $79 a year with no deductable for any phone you choose. I've purchased two phones from them with zero issues and I will never buy from a Verizon store again because of it.

    This post is Incredible 2!

All his friends will have an iphone. He will feel like a dork if he has a charge and will never let you forget it. (been there with a droid!).

FWIWs over at vzw.com the XPERIA Play and Droid Pro are free with new two year.

    Both have 1GHz CPUs (
MSM8255 SnapDragon for XPERIA & TI OMAP 3620 for PRO).

The Play even has a 4" screen with popular things like an FFC. Only downside is the low internal storage. Sony Ericsson has also stated that all XPERIA devices released this year will be getting ICS.

Anybody remember when you were a dork because your year old shoes made you a dork? Now a six month old PDA makes you a dork? If your son complains about any PDA you give him, take it away and give him a flip phone. He will still have it better than I had it a mere six years ago while in college.

God bless America. We are so lucky to be able to give our kids such lavish gifts
